Katherine (Burkenpas) Dykstra, 98 of West Lafayette, died at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette. Born on July 19, 1913 in Lafayette, she was the daughter of the late George and Jessie (Degroot) Burkenpas. She was a graduate of West Lafayette High School.
She married Ryan Dykstra and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Dykstra was the secretary for the Vice President of Purdue University for 20 years and then the secretary at Lafayette Christian Reformed Church, where she was also a member. She was a member of the Ladies Aide at Christian Reformed Church, loved going to movies on Friday nights, loved soap operas, and enjoyed photography, typing, traveling, and her rose bushes.
Surviving is a sister, Helen Hockema and a brother, Peter Burkenpas (wife, Barbara) both of Lafayette, 8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Peter Burkenpas, a sister, Dorothy Smith, a brother, Clarence Burkenpas, and two daughters, Nellie Jo Plantenga and Pauline Schelle.
Visitation one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service on Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Busscher officiating.
Burial to follow at Spring Vale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Lafayette Christian Reformed Church. Hippensteel Funeral Home entrusted with care.
