Alice Belle English Eager
Alice Belle English Eager, June 1, 1914 - October 24, 2011. Alice Belle English was born in McIntosh, Minnesota, on June 1, 1914. She passed away in Longmont, Colorado, on October 24, 2011 surrounded by those she loved. Alice Belle was the daughter of Walter M. English and Blanche Babcock English. At two weeks of age, the family relocated to West Lafayette, Indiana. She graduated from West Lafayette High School in1931 and Purdue University, school of science, in 1935. Alice Belle was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married her college sweetheart, Robert F. Eager (Purdue Class of 1937, school of forestry, Acacia Fraternity), in 1937. They began married life in Texas. Bob later worked for Alcoa which took them to Lafayette, IN, for many years. They had one daughter, Carole. Alice Belle was a homemaker. She and Bob retired in Indianapolis. Following her husband's death in1976, Alice moved to Boulder, Colorado, to be with her daughter, though she was always first and foremost a Hoosier. From an early age, Alice Belle was an athlete. She excelled in both golf and tennis. Her father told her to "choose one." She took up golf at the age of 12, playing and winning tournaments at the West Lafayette Indiana Country Club in 1928 and 1929. She also competed in the Indiana Women's Championships, and came in second at the age of 17. Her favorite memories were the yearly fishing trips to Ely and the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota. Summers in Lafayette, Indiana in the 1950's included many games of croquet, bowling team competitions on Sunday nights and the continuing love for golf at a less competitive level - playing with her husband and many friends at the local country club. She and Bob were members of the Elks Club. Alice Belle was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Carolyn Vera Valentine and Walter M. English, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Carole Fitzpatrick, son-in-law Ben of Niwot, Colorado, and four nieces and 1 nephew. Alice returned to her Hoosier Home and is at rest at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. A family Celebration of Alice's Life will be held in Indianapolis at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local hospice organization.
