James Compton

 


Professor James D. Compton died at home peacefully on December 8, 2022. Born on August, 18, 1932 at Home Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. His parents were Leroy Everett Compton and Maude Andes Compton. He is preceded in death by his two siblings J. Leroy Compton and Barbara Brown. He is survived by his sister Phyllis Geiger.
Jim attended West Lafayette High School and holds degrees from Purdue University, Miami and the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics. He retired from University of Chicago (Illinois) where he taught as a Professor of the Spanish language and shared his knowledge with passion, love and dedication. Jim was also an aficionado of classical music, opera and a long-time attendee and supporter of the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. There are no plans for a service at this time. Contribution's to WFMT Radio in Jim's memory would be welcomed.
