Stephen Moriarity

 

Stephen S. Moriarty died at 6:46 p.m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, in his home. Born Jan. 22, 1940, in New York City, he had been a resident of Lafayette for more than 55 years. He graduated from West Lafayette High School and Purdue Moriarty University where he earned a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in education. He was a member of the Purdue wrestling team. In 1967, he married Carol Wright in San Clemente, Calif., and she survives. Mr. Moriarty was a captain in Marine Corps and served a tour in Vietnam. He taught at Clinton Prairie High School for a year, and 32 years for Lafayette School Corp. at Tippecanoe Junior High and Sunnyside Middle School, retiring in 2000. As a wrestling coach at Sunnyside Middle School and Jefferson High School, his teams won many sectionals, regionals and tournaments and many of his student athletes advanced to the IHSAA state wrestling finals. He was a member of the Democratic Party, Lafayette Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, Retired Teachers Association and Purdue Letter-men's Club. After retirement he volunteered at the Food Finders Food Bank.
