RICHARD RANDOLPH PEYTON, M.D. passed away peacefully Saturday morning October 22, 2022 at Pavilion Senior Living in Lebanon, TN with family by his side. Dick, as known to family and friends, was born on February 3, 1941 at Home Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. The son of Frank Wood Peyton, M.D. and Mary Elizabeth Fouse Peyton, he attended schools in West Lafayette, Indiana, 7th grade in Florence, Italy, and following high school graduation in 1959, college at Duke University in Durham, NC. In 1963 he entered Bowman Gray Medical School, Wake Forest, NC, and upon completion of his medical degree in 1967 practiced residency training specializing in obstetrics and gynecology at Passavant Memorial Hospital in Chicago. In 1971 Dick entered active military service with the U.S. Air Force at Laughlin Air Force Base during the Vietnam War with honorable discharge as a Major in 1973. Following his military service, Dick joined his father’s obstetrics and gynecology practice at the Woman’s Clinic in Lafayette, IN. He then briefly practiced in Macon, GA when a neck injury in 1978 prompted a career change and he returned to Indiana for residency training at Indiana University Medical School specializing in radiation oncology. Receiving board certification in radiation oncology, over the next several decades Dr. Peyton established independent cancer clinics, including ones in Atlanta, GA., Jacksonville, FL., and Johnson City, TN. He then moved his private practice to Lebanon TN in 2002. In 2012, after over 4 decades of medical practice, he retired at the age of 71. Following retirement, Dick moved to West Lafayette in 2014 then back to Lebanon, TN in 2020. He enjoyed golf, sailing, and traveling. Throughout his life he always had a pet dog companion, from a boyhood Boxer named Sarge to a Labrador named Gabbi. He is survived by two sons: James D. Peyton M.D. (Emily) of Lebanon TN and their two adult grandsons of Dick, James Peyton and Will Peyton; and Todd B. Peyton of Chiang Mai, Thailand and Todd’s grandson of Dick, Matthew Peyton. He is also survived by four siblings: Patricia Peyton Truitt (Robert) of W. Lafayette, Thomas Owen Peyton Ph.D. of Lafayette, Frank Wood Peyton, Jr. M.D. (Beth) of Indianapolis, Kathryn Peyton Peck of Napa, CA, 13 nieces and nephews, and 27 grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Cynthia Peyton Jones and a nephew, Michael David Peyton. Loved by all, in God’s grace he rests in eternal peace. Family services are pending for December in Lafayette. Memorial contributions may be made to an underserved cancer patient or a charity of choice.
