Maggie (Mayo) Mills

Margaret “Maggie” Emily Mayo Mills passed away Aug. 1, 2018.

She was born to Henry and Ruth Lauderdale Mayo Sept. 2, 1940, in West Lafayette. As a child she enjoyed visiting farms with her father who was an agricultural educator for Purdue University. After graduating high school she began studying nursing. She married John Mills in 1961. She received a bachelor of science in nursing from Indiana University in 1964. After college she traveled the U.S. and Canada with her husband and son, Karl, eventually arriving in Nashville in 1968. She and John began a pottery on Antique Alley that still exists today. She enjoyed Nashville and Brown County and volunteered for many school and community functions. Many people enjoyed visiting her at the pottery.

After raising sons Karl and David, she began her career as a registered nurse at Bloomington Hospital. She excelled at patient care and is remembered fondly by her patients and co-workers. She loved going to lectures, participating in Walking Women, going to the library and listening to WFIU.
She wrote: “After many good years as a family member and friend, I have moved on to a new address. I’ve always enjoyed knowing and working with medical students, so I’ve given my body to the medical school’s department of anatomy so someone else gets a chance to see and learn. Brown County is full of good people and the best nature has to offer. I feel fortunate.”

Survivors include two sons, Karl Mills of Unionville and David Mills of Nashville; two brothers, Allen Mayo (Becky) of Indianapolis and Kenneth (Patsy) Mayo of Bosier City, Louisiana; a sister, Katherine Guntrip of Kent, Washington; two grandsons, Gregory Mills and Brian Mills, both of Bloomington; one granddaughter, Rachael Mills of Nashville; and seven nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be a celebration of her life at her home, 1620 Jacobs Lane. Friends and family are invited to come between 3 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21.

Memorial contributions can be made to WFIU or the Brown County Public Library.
