Michael Kelly Funk of Acworth, Ga.,
died Oct. 24 (note: 2011) at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., from complications
arising from myelodysplastic syndrome. He was 44.
He was born Sept.24, 1967, in at
LaSalle, Ill., the son of Christopher M. Funk of West Lafayette and Linda Kelly
Koss of Pasadena, Calif. He married Christie Leisinger on Sept. 2, 1995. She
survives.
He graduated from West Lafayette
High School in 1985, where he excelled in academics and athletics. During his
senior year, he was co-captain of the football team that played in the state
championship game and was awarded the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award at
the conclusion of that event. After high school, he attended Wabash College on
a Lilly Scholarship, where he again made his mark in athletics. He was MVP of
the football team his final two years and was a Division III All-American his
senior year. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Upon completing his education, he
briefly worked for Price Waterhouse in Chicago before starting his first
business, Healthtech Dynamics, a medical billing company. Within a few years,
he sold this business to Per-Se Technologies of Atlanta, Ga., and moved there
to become vice president of sales for Per-Se. In 2003, he and three other
Per-Se employees, launched his second business, Anodyne Health Partners, of
which he was CEO. In 2009 Andoyne was acquired by Athena Health of Watertown,
Mass. Prior to his death, he was employed by Athena.
Along with his parents and wife,
three children survive him: Christopher, Elizabeth and John. Also surviving are
two sisters and three brothers: Anne-Marie Reader of Boulder, Colo.; Dr. Margo
Funk of Shaker Heights, Ohio; Francis and Wolfgang Funk of West Lafayette; and
Morgan Koss of Pasadena, Calif. Jacqueline Funk of West Lafayette, Peggy and
Kent Lewis of Osprey, Fla., and Dr. Michael Koss of Pasadena, Calif., are
surviving stepparents.
A sister, Katherine Macaulay, is
deceased.
A memorial service was conducted in
Powder Springs, Ga. Memorials may be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center,
Houston, Texas.
