Date is 1/10/2025. I can't find the J&C obit, but there is a screen snap of one that has been added to his Findagrave listing at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/146035758/william-henry-friday. Bill Friday was the first person I met when I visited Lafayette to look for an apartment in late July 1977. At The Pub, 407 Union St., and long gone, where I stopped for lunch and sat at the bar one seat over from a man (Bill) who was watching baseball on the TV. We fell into conversation. I took a job at The Pub on weekend nights, did the graduate student thing weekdays, and I became a part of a circle of friends which included him.
ReplyDeleteHomebrewing became legal in 1978, and Bill and I and another 15 - 20 people in that circle of friends began making beer at our homes, in 5 gallon batches, and the Tippecanoe Homebrewers' Circle (THC) was born in 1979. Or 1980. Bill and my late husband Rick Westerman and I were among the founding members of Friends of Bob, the 501(c)(iii) live music cooperative that started in 1996 or 1996 and finally unincorporated in 2024.
Bill helped with the formation of Indianapolis's homebrew club a few years later. The Foam Blowers of Indiana is the second oldest homebrew club in Indiana. In 2014 the Indiana State Fair Brewers' Cup competition (since around 1999) created "The Bill Friday Club Award" and the THC finally won it in 2024. That competition is based on a club having more entries than the THC usually had. But we've become increasingly competitive the last few years.
Here's to Bill's memory. Good music, and good beer.
