Steve Tompkins

Steven J. Tompkins, 18, a member of the West Lafayette High School track team, died in a Sunday morning, Aug. 17, 1978, automobile accident along Ind. 43 near Mascouten Park in West Lafayette. Two of his classmates were also killed and a fourth was seriously injured.

Born in Oelwein, IA, he was a senior at West Lafayette High School. He was the son of Larry J. and Bette Crahan Tompkins of West Lafayette. His father is employed at Demeter Corp. of Fowler.

Steven was a member of the track team and had attended the AAU summer track meets. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Surviving with his parents are his siblings, Mary, Lori, David and Kevin Tompkins, all at home; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Tompkins of Orient, IA; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Kathleen Crahan of Oelwein, IA.
Funeral mass Aug. 29, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Father Donald Hardebeck officiating; internment St. Boniface Cemetery.

**West Lafayette High School Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund was established in 1978 in memory of James Segrist, Steven Tompkins, and Richard Grace (Class of 1978). It now honors many former students, staff, and friends of WLHS athletics. One or more scholarships, depending on earnings, are awarded each year to student athletes selected for their scholarship, athletic accomplishments, and sportsmanship.
